London boroughs lie at the heart of their communities and play a key role in enabling residents and business to influence and make decisions that affect them. London Councils supports this work by arguing on their behalf for greater freedom to do more and by highlighting local innovation.
We carried out a survey of boroughs to identify how new powers introduced under the Localism Act were being planned for and to gather evidence relating to community engagement and decentralisation. This research uncovered a wide range of activities and suggested many of London's local authorities have well-developed mechanisms for equipping communities with the powers and resources to shape their neighbourhoods.
