Responding to the latest government statsitics on rough sleeping, Sir Steve Bullock, London Councils' executive member for housing, said: “These figures make stark reading, particularly the huge increase in the number of rough sleepers in the last five years.
“Now is the time for Government to act – this worsening situation simply cannot be allowed to continue. London Councils has made clear that pledge to fully fund a new homelessness reduction bill must be properly reviewed – costings must not be based on estimates and guesswork.
“The capital continues to account for a huge percentage of the homelessness total across England. The particular and unique pressures facing London – a spiralling housing crisis coupled with the dramatic impact of welfare reform on our poorest communities – must also be addressed and we hope to see a reflection of this in the homelessness reduction bill debate in Parliament this week.”
